Snapdragon "Appleblossom"
Snapdragon "Appleblossom" - Antirrhinum majus.
An excellent large-flowered cut variety.
An ornamental plant, cultivated as an annual, 70-90 cm high. It blooms from late June until late frosts. The flowers are collected in racemose inflorescences. Cold-hardy, light-loving, undemanding to soil, and needs watering during dry periods.
Grown by seedlings. Sowing is carried out from early March to mid-April. Shoots appear in 8-12 days. Seedlings are planted in the second half of May with a distance between plants of 35-40 cm. Used for group plantings and flower beds, as well as for obtaining high-quality cuttings (snapdragons stand in water for up to two weeks).
Agrotechnics.
Location: blooms profusely in open sunny places, but can also grow in partial shade. Requires areas protected from the wind.
Soil: grows best in well-fertilized, medium-moist, loamy soil.
The crop tolerates short-term drought relatively easily, but is very responsive to watering and fertilizing with mineral fertilizers, which are carried out 2-3 times before flowering. If there is excess moisture, it gets sick and dies, especially when the seedlings are old. In order to extend the period of maximum decorativeness, it is necessary to regularly remove faded inflorescences. This technique stimulates branching of bushes, resulting in increased flowering. Resistant to frost.
Diseases and pests: for prevention, avoid overly thickened plantings, and when watering, try to prevent water from getting on the plants. Remove affected plants immediately.
Reproduction: seeds and cuttings. 1.0 g = 7500 seeds.
The plant is cold-resistant, seedlings and hardened seedlings can withstand short frosts down to -3-5°C. You can sow seeds in open ground before winter, but in this case flowering begins late, in August, so it is better to grow this crop with seedlings. Seeds are sown in mid-March; high and medium varieties require double picking. For sowing and picking, prepare a light soil mixture consisting of light turf and humus soil in equal proportions.
Seeds germinate very slowly, at a temperature of +20+22°C, shoots appear only on the 10-14th day. When germinating, seeds need light, so do not sprinkle them with a thick layer of soil. The seedlings dive into peat humus pots measuring 3x3 or 4x4 cm.
In the first week after picking, the plants are very sensitive to excess moisture in the soil (they are affected by the “black leg”), so it is better not to water them, but to spray them with a spray bottle. The first fertilizing with complete mineral fertilizer (5-8 g of nitrophoska per 10 liters of water) is carried out 7-10 days after picking, the second - after 10-12 days.
For better branching of the bushes, it is recommended to pinch the plants after the formation of 5-6 true leaves above the 3-4th leaf. Cut off shoot tips can be used for cuttings. At the seedling stage, it is possible to identify varieties with dark and light flower colors. In varieties with dark perianth colouring, the leaves are darker than in lightly colored ones, and the veins and petioles are reddish.
